Composer, cellist, singer and producer living between Brussels and Madrid, YAMILA dances on the edges of sound and conceptual cliffs. Vortex of frailty, electronic distortion and discourse fierceness, YAMILA has just released Iras Fajro (Forbidden Colours 2019), an expansive and immersive audiovisual proposal that travels through oneiric optics and resonances.
For her debut album, YAMILA summons in 11 songs the strength of electronic sounds in front of a seemingly fragile voice that at times unfolds in small coral clusters. The brilliant electronic arpeggios and rhythms dissolve in the velvety voices of the cello, which are sometimes intertwined with the creations of two collaborators, the British producer Clark (Warp) and the multifaceted ex-flamenco Niño de Elche (Sony).
Her live performances are contextualized with Brazilian artist Gabriel Fuchs visuals, presented as a haptic exploration of emotions usually associated with music. They illustrate a surreal dream, a river of conscience over time and space, broken pieces of lost memories, a nomad passage through space in and out of time, suspended in vibrato.
Over the last years she has composed for contemporary dance productions in places like the Nederlans Dans Theater, Gotemburg Opera or Taipei Dance Forum. She has premiered several projects in festivals like Sonic Acts Festival (Amsterdam), Arts Electronica (Linz), Seoul International Music Festival, STRP Festival (Eindhoven)…
“There is a forlorn quality to YAMILA’s voice that disguises a buried hope for a rebuilt, recaptured future, working its way toward life born anew.”
“Yamila’s work is a walk through sensations, spaces inhabited by sounds and a sound collection that can either fill film scenes or performances. She could easily become a cult artist.”
“There are records which are not such. They cannot be, actually. Or, at least, it’d be unfair to catalogue them as such. Iras Fajro is a special kind of visual poem.”
“Iras Fajro is raising up the game stake thanks to Yamila’s technical skills.”
“Yamila is a unique emotional experience.”
“Audacious creator with a special courage to search for sensitivity in a proposal full of digital gadgets and dominated by the sound of her cello.”
“You should keep her on your radar.”
